WFI suspends Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has slapped a one‑year ban on Olympic bronze‑medalist Aman Sehrawat. The ban, effective from September 23, stops the 22‑year‑old from competing in any wrestling event—national or international—until September 2026.

Sehrawat earned a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, he was disqualified for weighing in above the 57‑kg limit. After a short window to explain himself, the WFI’s disciplinary committee found his reply unsatisfactory and confirmed the suspension.

“We’re keeping the ban in place because the wrestler’s response was not adequate,” WFI president Sanjay Singh told reporters. “His coaching staff were already warned, and the wrestler was given a week to respond. We had to act.”

The committee noted that Sehrawat had joined a prep camp in Porec, Croatia, 18 days before his scheduled bout on September 14. That timeline gave him enough time to manage his weight and meet the regulations. Still, he failed to do so.

This isn’t the first weight‑related issue for Indian wrestling. Earlier this year, Vinesh Phogat withdrew from the Paris Olympics, and Neha Sangwan was disqualified at the 2025 World Under‑20 Championships for similar weight compliance problems.

The ban will affect Sehrawat’s plans for the 2026 Asian Games, where wrestling takes place from September 30 to October 3. Without a change in the WFI’s decision, the timing could severely damage his preparation and chances of competing in the continental event.
