Bangladesh took the field first in the Women’s ODI World Cup match at Visakhapatnam and finished with a solid 232 for six in 50 overs against South Africa. The game was played at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA‑VDCA Cricket Stadium on Monday.
How Bangladesh built their score
- Sharmin Akhter set the tone, smashing 50 off 77 balls with six fours.
- Nigar Sultana Joty, the team captain, added 32, but was caught by Laura Wolvaardt.
- Shorma Akter drove the final over into a win‑or‑lose zone, staying unbeaten on 51 in 35 balls, hitting four sixes and a tidy 18‑run burst.
- Ritu Moni finished the innings with a sensational 19 off just eight balls, adding another six to finish on 25 runs.
The opening pair Fargana Hoque (30) and Rubya Haider (23) struggled, and their 53‑run stand collapsed early, caught by the South African bowlers. In total, Bangladesh had been knocked down to 164 for four before Shorma’s big knock restored momentum.
South Africa’s bowlers were disciplined. Nonkululeko Mlaba took sparkling figures of 2 wickets for 42 runs, using the overcast conditions to limit Bangladesh’s scoring. The South African attack also produced a short burst of wickets that jolted Bangladesh back to 195.
