Women’s World Cup: Hopefully we can keep Wolvaardt quiet, says Knight

England’s top players are zeroing in on South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt as their biggest challenge in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup opener. The two teams face off at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, and Wolvaardt tops the list of threats for the England squad.

Since taking over as South Africa’s skipper, Wolvaardt has powered their batting lineup, especially alongside opener Tazmin Brits. The duo has built strong partnerships that keep opponents on edge.

Heather Knight, England’s captain, praised the South African side after their recent series down under. “South Africa is a very good team,” Knight said on JioStar. “We had some success against them in that series, but they’ve got brilliant players. Under Laura’s captaincy, they’ve done really well. She’s a calm leader, and her batting has stepped up a notch. She’s going to be key for them. We need to keep her quiet, but it’ll be a tough first test.”

Nat Sciver-Brunt, England’s skipper for this match, agrees. She highlighted the need to dismiss Wolvaardt early. “Laura Wolvaardt is such a big player for South Africa,” Sciver-Brunt said. “If you let her settle in, it’s hard to get her out. We’re putting plans in place for her. Their opening partnership has been solid in recent games, so grabbing those early wickets is crucial.”

Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who’s bowled against Wolvaardt in internationals and T20 leagues, including a Test match, shares the view. “Laura Wolvaardt is the one to watch,” Ecclestone said. “Getting her out would be huge—they rely on her for big runs. They’ve got strong all-rounders now, but she’s still at the heart of their batting. I’d love for one of our seamers to nab her early! It’s exciting to face her in the Women’s ODI World Cup.”

With the South Africa women’s cricket team in top form, England knows they must execute their strategy against Wolvaardt to kick off the tournament strong.
