The Shiv Sena‑UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray met with Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar and Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde on Friday in Nagpur. During the meeting he handed over a memorandum that called for the swift appointment of Leaders of the Opposition in both houses.
The MVA has already put forward Shiv Sena‑UBT legislator Bhaskar Jadhav as the Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition and Congress legislator Satej Patil for the same role in the Legislative Council. In a press briefing, Thackeray voiced strong frustration at the continued delays in filling these posts, even after repeated requests. He pointed out that when the AAP government ruled Delhi, the BJP—despite having just three seats—was given the Leader of the Opposition position, an arrangement that the BJP accepted.
Thackeray insisted that both houses need an opposition leader immediately and that no outsider should determine who gets the posts. He clarified that his party would nominate for the Assembly and Congress for the Council. He reiterated that the MVA has finalized Bhaskar Jadhav and Satej Patil for the respective positions.
“We’re the opposition, not the ruling party, setting those names,” he stressed. “Both houses must have a Leader of the Opposition during this winter session.”
When asked about the idea of a separate Vidarbha state, Thackeray said the demand cannot be honored. “Vidarbha is part of Maharashtra and cannot be carved out,” he said.
