Chennai – Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, turned 48 on Thursday and received a flood of birthday wishes from party leaders, grassroots workers and loyal supporters.

The DMK’s youth wing secretary was quickly congratulated on social media, with many messages applauding his leadership, dedication and the way he connects with the younger crowd in the state.

Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu hailed him as a “hero of hope,” underscoring the party’s high expectations for the young man.

Members of the DMK youth wing shared photographs and videos online, describing him as “a leader who stands as a pillar” of the Dravidian‑style government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

Across Tamil Nadu, various district units staged modest celebrations to mark the occasion, largely following Udhayanidhi’s wish for a low‑profile affair.

Born on November 27, 1977, he took office as Deputy Chief Minister on September 28, 2024. Ahead of his birthday, he urged party workers to keep celebrations simple and focus instead on relief efforts in the rain‑hit districts of South Tamil Nadu. “While a birthday brings happiness in everyone’s life, I am not keen on extravagant celebrations,” he said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He is the third person ever to hold the Deputy Chief Minister’s post in Tamil Nadu. His father, M.K. Stalin, previously held the same position during M. Karunanidhi’s tenure as Chief Minister, and O. Panneerselvam of the AIADMK was the second to do so.

K. Selvaperunthagai, president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, praised Udhayanidhi as “the voice of hope for the youth,” noting that he embodies both Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s revolutionary spirit and the welfare‑focused governance of the present administration. “May good health and the ability to continue serving the people always accompany you,” he wrote in a post on X.

Before stepping into full‑time politics, Udhayanidhi worked as a film producer and actor. He is the youngest leader to assume the deputy chief minister’s charge. Today, he manages key portfolios that include Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Special Programme Implementation, Poverty Alleviation Programme, Rural Indebtedness, as well as Planning and Development.
