India-Mauritius Ties Strengthen: Key Highlights from PM Ramgoolam’s Visit to New Delhi
Union Minister JP Nadda had a warm meeting with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in New Delhi on Tuesday. The two leaders celebrated the deep cultural and historical bonds that connect India and Mauritius, building on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier visit this year. That trip had already boosted their relationship to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, and this visit takes it even further.
Nadda welcomed Ramgoolam and highlighted how shared history and values make their partnership special. They discussed exciting new steps in bilateral cooperation, like setting up an AYUSH Centre of Excellence in Mauritius to promote traditional Indian medicine. India is also supporting the new SSR National Hospital there, and they launched the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra, which provides affordable medicines to people in Mauritius.
In a friendly exchange, Nadda shared details about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) structure, vision, and its global outreach through the Know BJP initiative. He suggested stronger party-to-party links and proposed exchanging delegations between BJP and Mauritius’s Labour Party. Both sides agreed to ramp up work in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, showing the strong trust that defines India-Mauritius relations.
Nadda was joined by Vijay Chauthaiwale, who heads the BJP’s Foreign Affairs Department. Ramgoolam’s official visit to India runs from September 9 to 16, packed with political, cultural, and spiritual events.
Earlier that day, President Droupadi Murmu met Ramgoolam at Rashtrapati Bhavan. They both praised the unique India-Mauritius bilateral ties, rooted in shared history, language, culture, and values. President Murmu expressed confidence in Ramgoolam’s leadership, saying it would help strengthen these long-standing bonds even more in the future.
Before the meetings, Ramgoolam paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. He laid a wreath at the memorial and signed the visitors’ book, wrapping up a key part of his eight-day trip.
Ramgoolam arrived in New Delhi on Monday, greeted by Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth. His visit kicked off with a spiritual touch—he headed to the Tirumala Temple in Tirupati first. He also joined an event at Bramarishi Ashram, welcomed by spiritual leader Siddhguru Sideswar Bramedswi Gurudev Swami. His delegation explored Varanasi and met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on September 11.
The highlight came in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they signed several agreements and announced a massive Special Economic Package worth over USD 680 million. This deepens their strategic and developmental partnership. On September 12, Ramgoolam visited the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, adding a cultural note to the trip.
These interactions show how India-Mauritius relations continue to grow, blending history, culture, and modern cooperation for a brighter future.
