In Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel paid respects to Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar by laying flowers on the occasion of Constitution Day in Gandhinagar.
During the ceremony at the Central Vista Garden, he respectfully approached the statue of the Constitution’s architect to acknowledge Dr Ambedkar’s lasting influence on equality, justice, and democratic principles.
The event drew a mix of local officials, including Mayor Meena Patel, MLA Rita Patel, BJP city president Ashish Dave, as well as personnel from the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and district administration.
First observed in 2015 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Constitution Day is now a nationwide observance on November 26. Across the country schools, offices, and public institutions read the Preamble, and citizens renew their pledge to uphold the Constitution’s ideals.
The day commemorates the adoption of India’s Constitution in 1949 and serves as a reminder of the nation’s guiding principles—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Honoring Dr Ambedkar, it reinforces the public’s commitment to democratic values and rights.
Throughout India, celebrations feature Preamble readings, awareness campaigns, and events that spotlight constitutional responsibilities, offering a moment to contemplate the foundations of India’s democracy and the duties it places on every citizen.
The Constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly—a panel of distinguished leaders, jurists, and thinkers that began meeting on December 9, 1946. Chaired by Dr Ambedkar, the Drafting Committee worked across 11 sessions over almost three years, debating every clause and shaping a framework that balanced India’s diversity with its democratic aspirations. Rooted in the country’s social realities, the Assembly crafted a document that guaranteed fundamental rights, established the government’s structure, and laid out justice and equality for all. The final draft was proclaimed on November 26, 1949, marking the start of India’s journey as a sovereign, democratic republic.
