On Sunday, at the opening of the India‑Japan Forum in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke about the shifting global landscape and the need for closer cooperation between India and Japan.
“Pleased to participate in the opening session of #IndiaJapanForum in New Delhi. Discussed the evolving world order and the imperative of deeper India‑Japan cooperation,” EAM Jaishankar said on X.
The forum—brought together by the Ananta Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)—offers a stage for leaders from both countries to shape their bilateral and strategic future through dialogue and joint action. “The aim of the forum is to bolster cooperation, leverage opportunities, exchange ideas, build mutual trust and develop a joint agenda for future cooperation,” the official statement read.
Earlier this week, India’s soon‑to‑be ambassador to Japan, Nagma M. Mallick, met with Japan’s Minister of Environment, Ishihara Hirotaka, to explore collaborative prospects.
During the G20 summit in Johannesburg on November 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, and they discussed ways to accelerate joint work in fields such as innovation, defence, and talent mobility.
On October 27, at the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, EAM Jaishankar met with Japan’s Foreign Minister, Motegi Toshimitsu, and the two agreed to intensify their partnership and implement a shared vision for the next decade of India‑Japan cooperation.
According to the MEA, India‑Japan ties have progressed through several stages: a “Global Partnership” in 2000, a “Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2006, and a “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2014. The defence and security collaboration remains a core pillar of the relationship, growing stronger through shared strategic concerns and a joint commitment to peace, security and stability in the Indo‑Pacific region.
