India adds 23 GW of green energy in 5 months, inches closer to 2030 target: Pralhad Joshi

India is racing ahead in the renewable energy race, folks! In just the first five months of the current financial year, the country has added a whopping 23 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy capacity. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi shared this exciting update on Tuesday at the FT Live Energy Transition Summit India in New Delhi.

“This is a huge achievement,” Joshi said. “India has done in five months what many countries struggle to pull off in years!” With these new additions, India’s total non-fossil fuel capacity now stands at about 252 GW. That means we’ve already hit the halfway point toward our ambitious goal of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.

Even better, half of India’s entire electricity capacity now comes from clean sources like solar and wind—five years ahead of schedule, as part of our Paris Climate Agreement promises. Joshi proudly noted that India is the only G20 nation to meet its 2030 targets back in 2021.

Shifting gears to solar power, the minister highlighted the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a game-changer for homes. So far, around 20 lakh households have gone solar under this scheme, which aims to reach 1 crore families. It’s set to boost rooftop solar capacity by 30 GW. Fun fact: The number of beneficiaries here outnumbers the populations of countries like Austria, Switzerland, Israel, or Singapore!

India’s renewable energy boom isn’t slowing down. The sector has exploded with growth in solar, wind, and even green hydrogen projects. Take solar manufacturing, for instance—our capacity has doubled to 100 GW between March 2024 and March 2025. PV cell production has tripled from 9 GW to 27 GW in the same time.

Joshi credited smart government moves like production-linked incentives (PLI), competitive bidding, and key reforms for this transformation. It’s all about building a greener, self-reliant India—one solar panel at a time!
