Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met at the Bhopal CM house on Monday to discuss the Chhindwara cough‑syrup tragedy. He ordered the suspension of two drug inspectors, the deputy director of the state’s Food and Drug Administration, and transferred a drug controller, according to an official release.
The CM said the state would pursue hard action against anyone found responsible in the Chhindwara case. “No negligence will be tolerated when lives are at stake,” he added.
Officials put on notice
- Drug Inspector Gaurav Sharma (Chhindwara) and Drug Inspector Sharad Kumar Jain (Jabalpur) are suspended.
- Deputy Director Shobhit Koshta of the Food & Drug Administration is also suspended.
- Drug Controller Dinesh Maurya has been transferred.
Immediate steps on the suspect syrup
The sale of the Coldrif cough syrup is banned, and all existing stock in shops will be seized. A recovery drive will start to retrieve the drug from homes in Chhindwara and surrounding districts. ASHA workers, government staff, and other officials will help pick up the medicine.
The government will audit other drug sales in the area and check that warning labels are clear. If a label is missing or unclear, the supplier will face action. Doctors who give combination drugs to children under four years will also be penalised.
Broader safety measures
Mohan Yadav said the state will work with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, chemist associations and other groups to raise awareness and improve safety protocols. The government will inform the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister about actions against the Coldrif manufacturer.
Current toll
At least 14 people have died and eight children are in hospitals after using the Coldrif syrup. The Madhya Pradesh government is treating the incident as a serious public‑health emergency.
