Tibetan Parliament in Exile Moves to Standardize National Flag in Dharamshala

In the scenic hills of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile is making big strides. During its ongoing 10th session of the 17th Parliament, lawmakers are gearing up to set official standards for the Tibetan National Flag—a powerful symbol of the Tibetan freedom movement.

A special committee has been working on this for months. They’ll present their recommendations on the flag’s exact dimensions, colors, and design in the next session. Right now, the work is on hold until then, but it’s already sparking a lot of interest.

Why does this matter? For years, the Tibetan national flag hasn’t had any official guidelines from past exile governments, like the Kashag (Tibetan Secretariat). This has led to all sorts of variations—flags made in places like Taiwan often have different shades or sizes, causing confusion.

Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering shared her thoughts on the issue. "We’ve formed select committees to review laws, track the growth of democracy in exile, and tackle the national flag. The goal is to make it more defined and recognizable," she said. She pointed out the inconsistencies: "Even before this session, people kept asking how to standardize it. Flags from different places don’t match—colors vary, and so does the quality."

Tibetan MP Dorjee Tsetan added some historical context. "This flag dates back to independent Tibet and stands for freedom everywhere, from inside Tibet to communities worldwide," he explained. "But in exile, groups make their own versions with different sizes and colors. Parliament openly discussed the need for uniform standards, just like other countries have for their national flags." He stressed that standardizing it is key for the Tibetan freedom movement, as it’s a vital emblem of unity.

This step feels both symbolic and practical, helping strengthen Tibetan identity and bring people together globally. The current session runs from September 10 to 18 in Dharamshala, where these important talks are unfolding.
