Kolkata, Nov 27 (LatestNewsX) – The Border Security Force reported that it recovered almost ₹1.02 crore worth of gold at the India‑Bangladesh frontier in Malda, West Bengal. The precious metal had been concealed inside a bicycle tyre.
According to a senior officer from the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier, troops of the 119 Battalion stationed at the M.S. Pur Border Outpost were alerted to possible gold smuggling traffic from Bangladesh. Heightened surveillance and traffic checks were launched across the sector.
Around 2:56 p.m., a suspicious individual was spotted heading toward the border on a bicycle. The patrol stopped him and began inspecting the vehicle. The front tyre appeared oddly swollen, prompting the troops to remove it. Inside, they discovered seven gold biscuits.
While the team handled the bicycle, the smuggler exploited the confusion and slipped into a nearby densely populated area. An outright confrontation could have risked collateral damage, so the officers gave him space.
The confiscated gold was taken to the outpost for weighing. The biscuits totalling 816.41 grams were appraised at ₹1,02,40,230. A subsequent sweep of the surrounding region failed to locate the escapee. The gold has now been handed to the relevant authority for legal proceedings.
The official praised the operation’s success and highlighted the BSF jawans’ readiness, alertness, and commitment to stifling illegal cross‑border activities. He urged local residents to forward any scrap or lead on gold smuggling incidents to the BSF Seema Sathi hotline “14419” or via WhatsApp message/voice call to 9903472227. Genuine tips will receive due rewards, and informants’ identities will remain protected.
