Paris, France – In the middle of a month‑long wave of protests over planned spending cuts, France has unveiled its new cabinet. The move came after Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne faced intense pressure from both the left and right, and the country’s government has been in a state of political uncertainty since the protests began.
Borne kept several LR members in their posts and brought back two key figures – finance minister Bruno Le Maire and state secretary Éric Woerth – to the new cabinet. She also re‑appointed several existing ministers and added fresh faces to hit a balance that may appeal to a wider political spectrum.
“At the start of consultations, we were still debating whether Rachida Dati would keep her post amid the ongoing judicial inquiries,” the Prime Minister told reporters. She also confirmed that Sébastien Lecornu, former Minister of Public Order, would hand over the armed forces portfolio to a new appointee.
The government announcement followed the release of an initial 18‑member lineup by Emmanuel Moulin, the Élysée Palace’s Secretary General. The cabinet’s formal naming is a necessary step before Borne’s policy speech on Tuesday, which will outline the government’s plan for the coming year.
The National Assembly currently lacks a clear majority, and the Prime Minister has pledged to avoid using Article 49.3 of the Constitution to force through the budget. “In a functioning parliament you cannot push through legislation without opposition support,” Borne said during a Friday statement.
The political turbulence that has gripped France in recent weeks was sparked by the public’s reaction to austerity measures announced by the government. As protests continue, the new cabinet’s stability and the ability to secure parliamentary approval of the budget remain key topics for observers and voters alike.
