Police in the UK are treating a recent blaze at a mosque in Peacehaven, East Sussex, as a hate‑crime arson. Officers rushed to 14 Phyllis Avenue after the fire broke out just before 10 p.m. Saturday. The fire wrecked the mosque’s front entrance and a nearby car. Luckily, no one was hurt. A video posted online shows a black‑painted car scorched at the mosque’s steps.
Sussex Police released photos of two masked men in dark clothing and asked the public for help in identifying them. CNN reported that a volunteer mosque manager said two balaclava‑wearing attackers forced the door open and poured petrol on the steps, igniting the building.
The mosque’s spokesperson said the community is “deeply saddened” by the attack, praising gratitude that no injuries occurred. “This hateful act does not reflect our community or our town,” the statement read. “Peacehaven has always been a place of kindness, respect and mutual support, and we will keep living by those values.” The mosque also urged people to reject division and respond to hate with unity and compassion.
Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna said the incident has raised concerns among local Muslims. Police have increased their presence at the mosque and are adding extra patrols at other places of worship across East Sussex to boost security and reassure the community. ()
