Brasilia, Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – Police in Brasília seized former President Jair Bolsonaro under a holding order issued by the Federal Supreme Court.
The Federal Police said the seizure is a precautionary hold, not a punishment, after investigators asked for it. Bolsonaro was taken around 6 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) on Saturday and escorted straight to the Federal Police headquarters.
This move comes at the close of an investigation into a rumored coup plot in Brazil. The former leader, who ruled from 2019 to 2022, had been under house arrest since August 4, with the preventive detainment aimed at protecting public order. Reports from Xinhua note that he has already been handed a sentence of 27 years and 3 months in prison.
Earlier that week, Bolsonaro’s legal team requested that Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes allow him to remain at home, citing health concerns. No date has been set for his court testimony, and officials have not announced whether additional steps will be taken during the day. The defense has released no further comments.
The preventive detention happens amid several investigations by the Supreme Court and Federal Police into Bolsonaro’s conduct both while in office and afterward. Judicial authorities say more details will surface once the confidential status of the cases is lifted.
