India and Norway kicked off their first-ever Maritime Security, Disarmament, and Non-Proliferation Dialogue in Oslo, focusing on building a safer and more secure maritime world. The talks zeroed in on following international rules like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to boost economic growth, peace, and progress in ocean-related matters.
From the Indian side, Joint Secretary Muanpuii Saiawi from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) led the delegation. Norway’s team was headed by Jon Elvedal Fredriksen, Director General of the Department for Security Policy and the High North in their Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to an MEA statement, both countries shared ideas on keeping the seas safe and secure under global laws. They looked at current maritime cooperation projects and ways to beef up international and regional efforts for better maritime security. Key agreements included teaming up more on fighting illegal activities at sea and safeguarding vital maritime infrastructure.
The discussions also covered updates on disarmament, non-proliferation, and global teamwork. Both sides plan to hold the next round of this India-Norway dialogue in New Delhi at a time that suits everyone.
This meeting comes amid warming ties between the two nations. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Norwegian counterpart, Jonas Gahr Store, on his re-election. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on his re-election. I look forward to continue working closely together to further strengthen the India-Norway partnership in all areas.”
Store’s Labour Party won Norway’s general election on Monday, with the centre-left bloc holding on to power even as the anti-immigration Progress Party gained ground, as reported by Euro News.
Adding to the momentum, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited Norway in June. During the Nor-Shipping event in Oslo, he met Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygard and Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen. They explored fresh opportunities to deepen India-Norway maritime ties in shipping, ports, and ocean policy.
