New Delhi, Oct 7 – The Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi president, Saurabh Bharadwaj, blasted a recent shoe‑throwing attempt on the Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai, calling the act a “disgusting” example of caste prejudice that must be punished.
Bharadwaj posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) where he accused right‑wing trolls of celebrating the lawyer who tried to toss a shoe at CJI Gavai. The judge, the first Dalit to hold the country’s highest judicial post, was targeted during a routine visit to the Supreme Court. Bharadwaj said the attack was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of hostility toward Dalits in powerful positions.
“We can see how the social media crowd glorifies the lawyer and demonises our judge because he is Dalit,” Bharadwaj said. “If a judge’s verdict offends a religious group, why should that judge be protected?”
He also criticized the lack of accountability for the incident. Delhi police released the 71‑year‑old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, after the Supreme Court registry declined to file charges. The lawyer had entered Court No. 1, attempted to throw the shoe, and was then held by security before being turned over to the police. While being escorted, Kishore allegedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan” (“The insult to Sanatan will not be tolerated in India”).
The Delhi Police said they questioned Kishore for three hours before releasing him. Sources say Kishore had been upset by the CJI’s decision to dismiss a plea aiming to restore a seven‑foot‑long beheading monument of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
Bharadwaj urged Supreme Court and High Court judges to recognize the vulnerability of the judiciary to such attacks. “If the judiciary does not speak up, the government’s intimidation tactics will only grow,” he warned.
The incident has sparked a wider debate over caste discrimination in India’s highest offices and the treatment of judges who make decisions that upset powerful groups. As Delhi’s top political party calls for firm action, the Supreme Court remains under scrutiny for its response to the attack.
