In Jaipur, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot fired back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, insisting that Congress will stay united no matter what happens in the national party.
Gehlot told reporters at Jaipur Airport that Modi’s recent remarks were “nonsense.” He pointed out that the BJP has struggled to elect a national president in two years, asking whether the problem lies within the BJP or within Congress.
“The BJP keeps spewing rhetoric, but Congress can handle how the central government misuses agencies,” Gehlot said. He vowed that his party would fight this together.
Anta by‑election
Gehlot said Congress won the Anta by‑election by 15,000 votes because people felt let down by the incumbent BJP government. He highlighted welfare schemes launched during his tenure that remain popular in villages. “People still remember those programmes and regret losing Congress leadership,” he added.
He accused the BJP of cutting popular initiatives such as the Annapurna Yojana, pensions, scholarships, and health and education schemes. “Those measures were diluted or shut down, and the public’s voice is not being heard,” Gehlot said.
Bihar election
On the Bihar poll results, Gehlot warned that the heavy use of money has turned politics into a game of cash power. He noted that a 10,000‑rupee transfer to women’s accounts got attention, but the real winner was money. “Election outcomes are now all about money and it’s a new story every day,” he said.
New chief secretary
Gehlot also commented on the appointment of V. Srinivas as Rajasthan’s new chief secretary. He praised the former chief secretary, Sudhansh Pant, for his experience and efficient support to the chief minister’s office. However, he questioned Srinivas’ 20‑year absence from Rajasthan for his suitability.
“It will be up to the principal secretary and senior officers to fill the gap in coordination and ground interaction,” Gehlot said. “Only time will tell how the new chief secretary performs without on‑ground experience.”
Gehlot’s remarks come as Congress prepares to face elections in several states, while the BJP remains under scrutiny for its leadership choices and policy changes.
