In a touching gesture of unity, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has chosen to skip his birthday celebrations this year. He’s heartbroken over the sudden death of Zubeen Garg, the beloved Assamese singer, musician, and cultural icon who meant so much to the state.
The governor made it clear: no parties at Raj Bhavan or anywhere else linked to him. “At a time when Assam mourns one of its brightest stars, I do not feel it appropriate to mark a personal celebration,” Acharya said. “Zubeen was not just an artiste; he was the voice of our people, the spirit of our culture. My heart is heavy with his passing.”
Zubeen Garg’s work in Assamese music, films, and social causes inspired millions and put Assam’s vibrant heritage on the global map. His tragic death in a scuba diving accident in Singapore has left fans devastated, creating a huge gap in the state’s artistic world.
This marks the 13th day since Zubeen Garg passed away. His body arrived in Guwahati on September 21 after first flying to Delhi. The governor’s decision highlights the shared sorrow across Assam, urging everyone to honor Zubeen’s memory through quiet reflection instead of festivities.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s suspicious death is moving forward swiftly. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally leading the probe, treating it as a top priority for justice. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emphasized this in a statement Thursday, with spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi saying, “No one in Assam will be above the law. The guilty must not evade appropriate punishment, and until justice is served, neither the BJP government nor the BJP party will rest.”
Two key figures—Shyamkanu Mahanta, organizer of the North East Music Festival in Singapore, and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s manager—now face 14 days in police custody, ordered by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup.
On September 27, Assamese actress Nishita Goswami and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who collaborated with Zubeen, showed up for questioning by the Assam Police’s Crime Investigation Department (CID).
The CID has filed a case (No. 18/2025) under Sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, as they dig deeper into the circumstances of the Assamese singer’s death.
