New Delhi, Nov 17 – The Election Commission of India announced that Assam will go through a special revision of its voter rolls, with the final list set to appear on 10 February 2026. The move comes as the state heads toward the 2026 Assembly elections, where a clean, accurate roll is crucial.
What’s Different About the Revision?
- The Commission said the Assam exercise is not a routine annual summary, nor as exhaustive as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) run across several states last month.
- Instead, it’s a “mid‑point” approach that focuses on targeted checks and better verification.
How Will It Work?
- Booth‑level officers will use pre‑filled registers to confirm, correct or update voter details, cutting errors and speeding up the process.
- Door‑to‑door verification will run from 22 November to 20 December.
- The draft roll will be posted on 27 December, and the final list will be released on 10 February 2026.
Key Points for Voters and Officials
- Every voter must be an Indian citizen, at least 18 by 1 January 2026, ordinarily residing in the constituency, and not disqualified.
- The Assam Chief Electoral Officer, Anurag Goel, will ensure families stay together, reorganise sections, remove expired or duplicate names, and add 18‑year‑olds who turn eligible by the cutoff date.
- Each polling station should host no more than 1,200 electors unless special permission is granted.
- Aadhaar numbers can be added but will not be required for inclusion.
Political Involvement
- Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the announcement and pledged full cooperation.
- Political parties will be consulted early, and the final roll requires the Commission’s written approval.
Why It Matters
Assam has long faced sensitivities around citizenship and voter registration. A precise, transparent roll will help ensure a fair election and strengthen public trust in the democratic process.
