In the morning, a tense moment unfolded in the Supreme Court of India when an elderly man tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during a hearing. The shoe missed the bench and security quickly wrapped up the protest. Gavai, known for his calm demeanor, stepped onto the bench, told the court he was the last person to be rattled by such an act, and the proceedings carried on.

The incident sparked strong reactions from top politicians. Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Pralhad Joshi called the attack “intolerable” and said Gavai’s composure only added to the dignity of the judiciary. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara blasted the act on X, calling the shoe‑thrown by a lawyer “a grave insult to the country’s judicial system.” He urged strict legal action against the offender and stressed that judges protect India’s democracy and constitution.

Minister for RDPR, IT and BT Priyank Kharge also weighed in, describing the assault as a “terroristic attack on the values of the Constitution” carried out by supporters of a “Manuvad” ideology. He warned that such conduct threatens constitutional respect and called for government accountability.

Gavai, who rose from a marginalized community to become India’s most respected jurist, had recently faced backlash over comments made during a public interest case about restoring a damaged Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. He said the remarks were taken out of context and emphasized his respect for all religions.

Law enforcement is questioning the man behind the shoe — identified as Kishore Rakesh by his proximity card — after he shouted slogans accusing “Sanatan” people of insulting the nation. His motives remain unclear.

The episode highlights growing tensions over the judiciary’s role in upholding the constitution. All eyes remain on how authorities will respond and whether this marks a new wave of disrespect toward India’s democratic institutions.
