In Bare illy, Uttar Pradesh, authorities moved quickly after tensions rose during the “I Love Mohammad” protests earlier this month.
On Saturday, the Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) used a bulldozer to clear land on the property of Dr Nafees—who was arrested on September 26 in connection with the protests outside the house of IMC chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan.
Joint Secretary Deepak Kumar explained that the action targeted the Raza Palace, a site linked to the unrest.
The protests unfolded outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and the IMC chief’s home, with demonstrators holding “I Love Mohammad” signs.
They threw stones at police after Friday prayers, prompting a heavy police response.
By the end of September, Uttar Pradesh Police had arrested 81 people, including Nafees Khan and his son Farman Khan, who are closely associated with Maulana Raza.
Raza, already in judicial custody for orchestrating the stone‑pelting, remains a key figure in the case.
To curb further disturbances, the Bareilly administration shut down mobile internet and broadband services for 48 hours, cutting connections from 3 p.m. on October 2 until 3 p.m. on October 4.
Meanwhile, the Bareilly Municipal Corporation launched an anti‑encroachment drive, clearing temporary structures that blocked roads and drains across the city.
Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Maurya highlighted a recent operation in Sailani Market, where encroachments were removed to improve traffic flow and drainage.
The council plans to continue these efforts throughout the city to keep roads open and infrastructure running smoothly.
