In North Bengal, heavy rain and landslides have tragically claimed 36 lives so far, officials say. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local governments in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri report the numbers as of Tuesday morning. Weather patterns improved on Monday, sparking a faster relief push. Rescue teams moved many people to safer sites and guided tourists out of the danger zone.
The disaster‑touched politics in West Bengal has come under scrutiny. After a vehicle carrying BJP Member of Parliament Khagen Murmu and his party’s chief whip, Shankar Ghosh, was attacked near the flood‑hit areas, the Prime Minister reacted on social media. He accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of “insensitivity” and highlighted perceived chaos in state law and order.
Mamata Banerjee countered the Prime Minister’s statements, saying he was exploiting the tragedy for political gain. She argued that no evidence had been presented and no official inquiry was underway. BJP officials then fired back, calling her remarks “political” and accusing her of abandoning her duties to tend to her party’s members instead of overseeing relief efforts.
BJP leaders maintain that the attackers were not civilians but “goons” backed by the ruling party, and they point to broader claims of abuses by Trinamool authorities—including extrajudicial killings, gender‑based violence, and discriminatory relief distribution. Both sides are fighting over who can best claim responsibility for the crisis in the hills and plains of North Bengal.
