Kolkata – Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – West Bengal Police announced that a young man from Rajasthan has been detained after it was discovered he had created a counterfeit social‑media account using DIG Shyam Singh’s photo and name. The unlawful post spread false rumours, and the accused is being held on suspicion of misleading the public.
The Cyber Crime Department of Burdwan Police took the youth into custody. Authorities say he was brought to West Bengal on a transit remand. Police sources identified him as Salman Khan, a resident of Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.
Investigators at Burdwan Police had noticed a fake Facebook page impersonating DIG Shyam Singh for a while. Aiming to tarnish the state government’s image and deceive ordinary citizens, the offender used the spoof profile. Once the deception was uncovered, officers at the Burdwan Cyber Crime Police Station registered a suo moto case and opened an inquiry.
Through digital footprints, technical analysis, and reliable sources, the police traced Salman’s location and coordinated with local police forces in Rajasthan for a joint operation. He was apprehended with several electronic devices. On Saturday, Salman appeared before a Burdwan court, which placed him in a seven‑day police custody.
The investigation is ongoing, with police probing whether additional members are implicated in the scheme. A senior officer of Burdwan Police commented, quoting: “After seeing the fake profile on Facebook, an investigation was started. It was learnt that a youth named Salman Khan was operating the fake profile using the photographs and details of DIG Shyam Singh. A team of officers from the Cyber Crime Police Station went to Rajasthan to nab the accused. He was brought to the state. He will now be interrogated to find out more about the matter.”
