Bhubaneswar, Odisha – Indian lawyers and political leaders condemned a bizarre shoe‑throwing attempt on the Chief Justice of India.
On Wednesday, Biju Janata Dal vice‑president Debu Prasad Mishra blasted the effort as “only‑for‑lunatics” while praising Chief Justice B. R. Gavai for staying calm. Mishra said the judge’s quick intervention prevented a more serious reaction against the lawyer who tried to strike the CJI with a shoe inside the Supreme Court.
The incident happened on Monday when 71‑year‑old lawyer Rakesh Kishore stepped forward to throw a shoe at the CJI. Security caught him right away, and he was escorted out of the courtroom. While being removed, Kishore shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan,” and later told reporters he did not regret his action. He said the CJI’s remarks—made when he dismissed a petition to restore a Lord Vishnu statue in the Javari temple in Khajuraho—had hurt him.
The All India Judges Association (AIJA) has expressed strong concern over the lawyer’s conduct. The association called the act “unbecoming of the legal profession” and said it undermined the dignity of the Supreme Court and threatened judicial independence. In its resolution, AIJA urged the legal fraternity to uphold professionalism and respect the courts.
The AIAIA’s statement also reaffirmed solidarity with CJI BR Gavai and the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need for decorum, discipline, and institutional integrity.
The shoe‑throwing episode has sparked a wider debate about the relationship between the Bar and the bench, as well as calls for stricter safeguards against such attacks on the judiciary. The incident remains under scrutiny by courts and political parties across India.
