In New Delhi on Sunday, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai celebrated the Supreme Court Bar Association’s (SCBA) walkathon with a bright, engaging message: Justice for All. The 4‑kilometre walk opened the event, and the CJI walked ahead in sports gear, flanked by tight security and joined by fellow justices and lawyers.
During the walk, the CJI reminded reporters that every branch of government—executive, legislature, and judiciary—exists to serve citizens. “Justice for all should be our motto,” he said. He encouraged judges to keep the public’s needs front and center, echoing the democratic spirit of India’s legal system.
SCBA officials reported that the event offered 4‑km and 8‑km runs, plus a 4‑km walk. Judges Sanjay Karol, Vikram Nath, and J.K. Maheshwari participated alongside Gavai and a crowd of lawyers. The walk drew attention to one of the Supreme Court’s key priorities: improving legal aid and expanding access to justice.
The next day, at the National Conference on Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms, Chief Justice Gavai spoke again about the importance of legal support. “Legal aid is an act of nation‑building,” he said. He highlighted Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of transforming lives through justice and stated that the legal aid movement “gives voice and dignity to those unheard.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the conversation, praising the government’s Legal Aid Defence Counsel System (LADSC). In just three years, the scheme has settled about 800,000 criminal cases, providing free and high‑quality representation to the poor, Dalits, and other vulnerable groups. “LADSC ensures ease of justice for underserved communities,” Modi noted.
The LADSC is a comprehensive program that places full‑time defence counsel in district headquarters. These counsel act like a legal clinic, handling criminal cases from the pre‑arrest stage through trial and appeals, thereby ensuring continuous legal support for those who can’t afford it.
The walkathon and the subsequent conference underline a growing commitment among India’s leaders to make justice truly accessible. By celebrating “Justice for All,” the Supreme Court, the SCBA, and national policymakers reaffirm their duty to protect the rights of every citizen, regardless of background.
