Indian voters in Bihar are gearing up for a high‑stakes assembly election, and the Congress party is moving fast to secure its traditional seats.

At a top‑level meeting on Wednesday, October 8, Delhi, the Party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) cleared the names of 25 candidates in constituencies that have long been Congress strongholds. The decision comes as the party negotiates seat‑sharing with its Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) partners—mainly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Left parties.

The meeting, held at Indira Bhawan, was attended by senior Congress leaders. Son Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi joined virtually, while K.C. Venugopal, Ajay Maken and other officials were present in person. Bihar state chief Rajesh Ram said the seats cleared by coalition partners and the party’s own bastions have been finalized after thorough discussion.

“We want these constituencies to stay with Congress, and we have decided the candidates carefully,” Rajesh Ram told reporters. “The official list will go public only after final talks with alliance partners and state leaders.”

The Congress expects to contest around 55–60 seats out of Bihar’s 243 seats, staying within the Mahagathbandhan framework. Bloc partners are still hashing out the remaining allocations, but leaders remain optimistic about reaching an agreement.

“There’s no infighting among the coalition partners,” Ram added. “We’ll announce the final list together once everyone agrees.”

Congress Legislative Party leader Shakeel Ahmed confirmed the CEC’s approval of the candidate list for the key seats, while Congress MP Mohammed Jawaid highlighted that senior leaders were deeply involved in the selection process.

Bihar’s assembly elections will take place in two phases on November 6 and 11, with vote counting scheduled for November 14. The Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD, is poised to challenge the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The outcome will test opposition unity and strategy in one of India’s most politically dynamic states.

All eyes will now turn to the final seat‑sharing agreement and whether Congress can regain its influence across Bihar’s electorate.
