In New Delhi on October 1, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal fired sharp criticism at the Indian government’s move to issue a commemorative coin and stamp honoring the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He called it a “deep insult” to India’s freedom movement and the core values of the Constitution.
Venugopal took to X, formerly Twitter, to question why the government is celebrating the RSS. He pointed out that the organization allegedly collaborated with British colonial rulers during the independence era and faced a ban from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel right after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. “How can an organization banned by Sardar Patel be honored by the Indian government today?” he asked.
The Congress general secretary didn’t stop there. He accused the RSS of attacking key constitutional principles like social justice and secularism. “How can those who push to rewrite our Constitution and undermine Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision for social justice be treated as national icons?” Venugopal wrote.
This outburst comes as debates heat up over the RSS’s growing ideological sway in Indian politics and its controversial history in the freedom struggle. The Congress party has long argued that the RSS stayed out of the independence fight and opposes any official nod to it in national events.
The BJP, which shares deep ideological roots with the RSS, hasn’t given an official reply to Venugopal’s comments yet. But BJP leaders have often stood up for the RSS, describing it as a vital cultural and nationalist group that boosts society in positive ways.
Expect this RSS controversy to spark more political fireworks, especially with opposition parties like Congress ramping up attacks before key state elections. The Congress vows to keep fighting what it views as efforts to twist history and weaken constitutional ideals.
