Chennai-based defense tech startup Big Bang Boom Solutions has landed a major deal with the Indian Navy. The company signed a contract on June 28 under the Defence India Startup Challenge (DISC), run by the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDex). They’re set to develop a cutting-edge multi-spectral camouflage cloak that shields ground assets from enemy radar using advanced nanotechnology and metamaterials.
This cloak works like a roll-on, roll-off cover. It hides parked aircraft by slashing their radar and thermal signatures, making it tougher for foes to spot them. Best part? Troops can deploy it quickly without halting operations, tackling a key vulnerability head-on.
At the same time, Big Bang Boom Solutions scored a $5 million boost from the India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F). The funding will fuel a joint project to create rugged autonomous drones that thrive in GPS-denied industrial settings—think harsh environments where regular UAVs fail.
R Shivaraman, the company’s co-founder and chief technical officer, credits Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for making this possible. “Initiatives like iDex, envisioned by the PM, let startups dream big and add to India’s self-reliance in defense—Atmanirbharta,” Shivaraman said. He emphasized the firm’s focus: “From safeguarding frontline assets to drones that go where humans can’t, we’re all about survivability and real-world practicality.”
CEO and co-founder Praveen Dwarakanath echoed the excitement, thanking iDex and the Ministry of Defence. “These wins show India’s homegrown defense tech is on the rise,” he noted. “It’s not just the gadgets—it’s about building local innovation, teaming up globally, and creating solutions that grow fast. That’s the future for Indian deep-tech startups.”
The projects spotlight the company’s dual mission: boosting defense survivability and industrial toughness with affordable, durable systems.
Big Bang Boom Solutions kicked off strong back in 2019, winning iDex 1 and 2 challenges for “See Thru Armor” and countermeasures against illegal drones. They wrapped those up in 2022, earning big procurement contracts from the Indian Army and Air Force.
They kept the momentum with a speedy SPRINT project for the Indian Navy on indigenous morphine compounds. Completed in just six months, it led to new Navy contracts.
Now, they’re tackling iDex 5 and 7 wins: a non-lethal vessel immobilizer and thermal imaging drone, both due for completion this year.
The DISC program, launched by the Ministry of Defence with the Atal Innovation Mission, helps startups, small businesses, and innovators prototype and sell defense and security solutions—fueling India’s push for indigenous technology.
