Hyderabad’s newly appointed Police Commissioner, V. C. Sajjanar, wasted no time laying out his plans to tackle the city’s biggest challenges. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday shortly after taking charge, Sajjanar promised a tough crackdown on drugs, calling them the top threat in India’s fastest-growing city.
“Drugs are ruining the future of our youth,” Sajjanar said. He vowed that Hyderabad police would handle the drug menace with an iron fist. His team plans to review old drug cases, dig into the root networks, and go after everyone involved through strict legal action.
To ramp up the fight, Sajjanar wants to boost the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and push harder on awareness drives like the “Say No to Drugs” campaign across neighborhoods.
Turning to cybercrimes, he expressed deep worry about scams hitting senior citizens hard, including fake “digital arrests” and stock market frauds. “We’re organizing awareness sessions in colonies, apartments, and bastis to keep people safe,” he added.
At the heart of his vision is “People Welfare Policing,” which he sees as key to protecting Hyderabad residents. This approach covers everything from keeping law and order to improving traffic safety and road rules. It also focuses on safeguarding women and children, using AI technology to prevent cyber and financial crimes, offering round-the-clock citizen services, and supporting police staff.
Sajjanar didn’t hold back on food adulteration either, labeling it a major health risk. He assured residents that anyone caught tampering with food will face tough penalties.
Traffic woes in Hyderabad are getting worse as more vehicles flood the streets, especially after GST cuts made cars cheaper. Sajjanar outlined long-term fixes to cut congestion and save commuters’ time. He had strong words for drunk driving: “Drivers under the influence are like moving bombs on our roads. We won’t stand for it.” Expect stricter enforcement there.
Crimes against women and children? Sajjanar made it clear: “We’ll deal with them most severely.”
He also celebrated Hyderabad’s spirit of unity. “This city stands for peace and communal harmony,” he said. “We’ll keep nurturing our Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb—the culture of togetherness and diversity.”
Finally, Sajjanar emphasized caring for police officers. “Our hardworking team deserves top priority,” he noted, promising recognition and rewards for standout work.
