Fraudster Posing as J&K Lt Governor’s Officer Caught in Kupwara
Police in Jammu and Kashmir have nabbed a clever fraudster who tricked people by pretending to be a top official. This arrest happened in Kupwara district, where the economic offences wing of the crime branch sprung into action on Monday.
Meet Abdul Majid Mir, a resident of Lishtiyal in Kupwara. Authorities picked him up after a complaint revealed his shady scheme. According to the FIR No. 10/2025, Mir posed as the Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He sweet-talked victims with promises of government jobs and prime land plots at SDA Colony in Bemina, Srinagar. But it was all a scam—he pocketed over Rs 50 lakh from unsuspecting folks.
Digging deeper, investigators uncovered more dirt. Mir handed out fake appointment letters claiming they came from the Airport Authority of India. He also whipped up bogus land allotment papers from the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA). These tricks led to charges under key sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): 419 for cheating by impersonation, 420 for fraud, and 467, 468, and 471 for forgery.
The court in Srinagar wasn’t messing around. A Judicial Magistrate 1st Class gave the police five days of remand to grill Mir and uncover more details. The Crime Branch Kashmir’s economic offences wing is on high alert, vowing to hunt down such con artists and warning everyone to stay sharp against job scams and land fraud in Jammu and Kashmir.
This isn’t an isolated case. Lately, Kashmir has seen a spike in economic offences, with fraudsters pulling off big cons. Take the recent bust in Ganderbal district: a bank officer and three accomplices ran a fake "high-yielding investment scheme." They lured people with dreams of doubling their money fast, much like a Bollywood rags-to-riches plot. In the end, they swindled over Rs 8 crore from gullible investors. The crooks then splurged on land, diamonds, and even shopping complexes to build their empire.
If you’ve faced similar fraud attempts in Kashmir or Jammu and Kashmir, report it right away. Staying vigilant is key to beating these scams.
