India’s pharmaceutical industry is buzzing with excitement over the new GST reforms kicking off today, September 22. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) hails the changes as a game-changer that will make medicines more affordable and easier to access for everyone.
Sudarshan Jain, the IPA’s Secretary General, shared his thoughts with . “September 22 marks a huge moment as the festive season starts with Shardiya Navaratri,” he said. “These Next Generation GST reforms will supercharge India’s economy, push self-reliance, and transform healthcare by slashing costs. We’ve removed GST on 36 essential medicines and limited it to just 5% on most others— a real win for patients and the industry.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed the enthusiasm in his national address, urging Indians to embrace Swadeshi and choose Made in India products. With the reforms taking effect on this auspicious first day of Navaratri, he called it a “Bachat Utsav,” or Savings Festival. “Turn every home and shop into a showcase of Swadeshi goods,” Modi said. “Buy products that carry the hard work and sweat of our youth—these Made in India items deserve our support.”
Modi tied the reforms to the government’s “Nagrik Devo Bhava” approach, treating citizens like gods. He highlighted massive savings ahead: combining income tax exemptions with these GST cuts will put over Rs 2.5 lakh crore back into people’s pockets this year alone. “This is why it’s a festival of savings,” he added.
The Prime Minister stressed self-reliance as the key to a developed India, especially for small businesses and MSMEs. “To build Viksit Bharat, we must make what our people need right here at home,” Modi explained. “Lower GST rates and simpler rules will boost MSMEs, small industries, and cottage sectors. Their sales will rise, taxes will drop—double benefits all around.”
Drawing inspiration from history, Modi linked today’s push to the Swadeshi movement that fueled India’s independence. “Just as Swadeshi strengthened our freedom struggle, it will power our path to prosperity now,” he said.
These reforms got the green light at the GST Council’s 56th meeting earlier this month, aiming to ease burdens on everyday consumers and spark economic growth through smarter taxation.
