In Guwahati, Assam, a court has ordered 14 days of police custody for two people linked to the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who worked as a co-musician with Garg, and Amritprava Mahanta, a co-singer, appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Friday. Assam’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested them on Thursday after days of intense questioning.
This brings the total arrests in the Zubeen Garg death case to four. Earlier on Wednesday, police nabbed Shyamkanu Mahanta, the key organizer of the North East India Festival in Singapore, and Siddharth Sharma, Garg’s manager. The court also sent them to 14 days in custody. In a major update, the CID has now added a murder charge under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act to the case filed against the suspects.
The investigation into Zubeen Garg’s drowning in Singapore is heating up on multiple fronts. The Singapore Police Force recently shared the autopsy report and their initial findings with India’s High Commission there, responding to a formal request from Indian authorities. Police in both countries urge the public to stay away from posting any videos or photos related to the case, as probes continue.
Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, spoke out about the ongoing Zubeen Garg death investigation. She told reporters she trusts the legal system completely and asks everyone to be patient. “The truth will come out, and those responsible will face justice,” she said.
The 52-year-old music icon from Assam tragically died on September 19 after a drowning incident in Singapore. His body arrived in Guwahati on Sunday via a commercial flight from Delhi, where fans mourned the loss of one of their biggest stars. Authorities promise more details as the Zubeen Garg case unfolds.
