New Delhi was drenched in heavy rain and gusty winds on Tuesday, knocking the city’s heat down but also throwing a wrench into everyday life and air travel.
From early morning, brief showers kept falling through the day. After a short calm in the afternoon, dark clouds rolled in again, bringing a heavy downpour and strong winds that hit central and south Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned earlier, issuing yellow and orange alerts for moderate rain, light thunderstorms and lightning. It said the western disturbance could bring heavy showers across Northwest India.
“We expect scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, plus thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30‑50 km/h in Northwest India on October 7,” the IMD noted.
The sudden weather chaos stopped traffic in many low‑lying spots, causing waterlogging and swelling road congestion. City temperatures fell noticeably as clouds covered the sky.
Flight crews at Delhi airport had to adjust plans because the rain threatened operations. “Due to adverse weather conditions, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted,” the airport said. “Our on‑ground teams are working with all stakeholders to keep a smooth passenger experience.”
Air travelers were urged to check their airline’s status and to consider using the Delhi Metro to reach the airport, cutting out potential delays caused by flooded roads.
Looking ahead, the IMD warned that the southwest monsoon could retreat from parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Maharashtra over the next three to four days.
For locals and visitors, the day’s unexpected rainfall serves as a reminder to stay alert on weather alerts, keep up with flight updates, and stay safe during heavy Delhi weather.
