Heavy rain, lightning, thunder and gusty winds that can reach up to 40 kmph are expected to keep flooding Kerala on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has widened its warnings after a strengthening cyclonic system over the southeastern Arabian Sea pushed more moisture into the region.
A yellow alert has been put in place for seven districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam – signalling that the weather will stay wet for the next several days. In practical terms, the alert covers rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in a 24‑hour period, so both officials and residents are advised to stay alert.
Because the prevailing system remains active, thunderstorms and intense showers are likely to persist across Kerala until November 26. The latest bulletin also highlighted that one or two locations could receive between 7 cm and 11 cm of rain each day from 22 to 26 November. Lakshadweep is facing a similar pattern on 22 and 23, with strong lightning‑laden storms expected throughout both areas.
The Sabarimala pilgrimage season is in full swing, and the forecast warns devotees heading to the hill shrine. Moderate showers are predicted for Sannidanam, Pampa and Nilakkal on Sunday, which may make paths slick and visibility lower. Pilgrims are urged to plan their movements carefully to avoid accidents caused by waterlogging and reduced visibility.
Maritime authorities have issued a stern warning to the fishing community. Fishermen operating out of Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts have been told not to head into the sea from Sunday through Tuesday because of rough seas and winds ranging from 35 to 55 kmph. Deep‑sea vessels are being directed to return to the nearest shore by Tuesday. In addition, those near South Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, the Comorin region, the Andaman Sea and the southeastern Bay of Bengal are advised to stay onshore until Wednesday, as the system could amplify wave action.
The yellow alerts will remain in effect over the next four days. On 23 November, the same seven districts listed above are under warning. On 24 November, alerts expand to include Palakkad and Malappuram. By 25 November, the original districts are again listed, and on 26 November, the alerts persist for all but Palakkad and Malappuram. Officials are watching the situation closely as the state braces for several more days of widespread rain.
