Jammu, Nov 22 (LatestNewsX) – Mushroom farming is swiftly becoming a profitable venture for farmers in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, bringing in reliable, steady income. The growers are enjoying significant gains, and the activity has attracted unemployed youth who see it as a “rewarding” form of work.
Because mushroom cultivation can be carried out all year, requires modest capital and delivers attractive returns, many traditional farmers are now considering switching to this new practice.
Joginder, a participant in the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP), says mushroom farming has transformed his life. HADP, an ambitious project of the Agriculture Production Department in Jammu & Kashmir, aims to unlock the region’s agricultural potential and drive a shift toward profitability, resilience and sustainability.
He entered the mushroom business this year, crediting the government’s pioneering scheme for his success. The department supplied him with 1,500 bags, and he kicked off a record‑setting production run in June. Another batch is planned for the end of the year. He has hired many young people to handle everything from planting to harvesting.
Joginder shared with LatestNewsX, “We have set up a mushroom unit in Tikari Manthal. The total cost of the project is Rs 20 lakh, out of which we received a subsidy of Rs 8 lakh from the Agriculture Department. In the first lot in April, we cultivated 1,500 bags and produced around 40 quintals of mushrooms.”
Mushroom Development Officer Vinod Gupta explained that the year‑round mushroom cultivation initiative supplies farmers with an Rs 8 lakh subsidy from the department and an Rs 12 lakh benefit for the beneficiaries.
He added that the scheme targets unemployed youth, helping them set up income‑generating units and encouraging others to adopt mushroom farming.
