IndiGo, India’s top airline, celebrated National Engineering Day in a big way by welcoming its first all-women batch of 33 maintenance technicians. This exciting step boosts the airline’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, opening doors for more women in aviation’s technical jobs.
The IndiGo engineering team keeps the airline’s massive fleet of over 400 aircraft safe and reliable, hitting an impressive 99.89% Technical Dispatch Reliability in FY25. These new women technicians just wrapped up a fun week-long induction program. They heard inspiring talks from senior leaders and real-life success stories from seasoned women engineers, getting them ready to help IndiGo soar even higher.
IndiGo already boasts a strong lineup of women in its workforce—over 44.8% of employees are women, including one of the world’s highest numbers of women pilots at 16.2%. This latest move cements IndiGo’s spot as a leader in women in aviation, pushing for more females in maintenance technician roles and top leadership spots.
Around the world, women remain underrepresented in aviation technical fields. For instance, women in aircraft maintenance make up just about 3% in 2021 and dipped to 2.6% in 2024. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) notes that women in licensed aviation roles—like pilots, air traffic controllers, and maintenance technicians—grew slightly from 4.5% in 2016 to 5.1% in 2021. IndiGo’s initiative could inspire big changes in gender equality in aviation.
Just last month, on August 14, 2024—India’s 77th Independence Day—IndiGo added 77 female pilots to its Airbus and ATR fleets. That included 72 for Airbus and 5 for ATR, marking another historic win for women pilots in India.
Captain Ashim Mitra, IndiGo’s Senior Vice President, shared his excitement: “We are delighted to announce the landmark induction of 77 female pilots into our Airbus and ATR fleet. At IndiGo, we have always promoted a workplace that thrives on diversity and inclusivity. We acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions made by women at IndiGo, not just for their technical prowess but also as inspirational leaders within our organisation. We firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not just integral to our core values, but they are also key drivers of innovation and growth. We pledge to continue upholding these values in all our endeavours.”
