In New Delhi/Ranchi on 24 November, Jharkhand’s Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, a senior Congress figure, took to his official X page to push back against rumors that he had threatened election staff. He called the sensational headlines “deliberate misrepresentation” and stressed again that he would stand by voters’ constitutional protections as the Assembly elections enter their second phase.
On X, the minister wrote that some outlets had taken his words out of context—and that was something he “condemned in the strongest terms.” He explained that he had spoken only about “certain fraudulent elements in our area are impersonating fake BLOs (Booth Level Officers) to scare and extort money from poor and innocent citizens.” He urged the state to act harshly against such crooks and to report any suspicious person who tries to erase names or commit illegal acts. He added that “BLOs are our respected officers of the Election Commission of India—no fraud can ever take their place.”
He had requested that the Election Commission carry out the full voter‑list revision and verification with complete transparency, so that no poor, tribal, Dalit or ordinary citizen is wrongly dropped from the rolls. He warned that any plan for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state would affect tens of millions of people, costing the public voice and constitutional rights. “I remain fully committed to defending democracy, the Constitution and the rights of every Jharkhandi,” he declared.
The controversy began when a clip from a public meeting in Jamtara surfaced and spread quickly on social media. BJP opposition leaders accused the minister of threatening BLOs on camera and called for the Election Commission to register an FIR and remove him from the cabinet. The Election Commission has reportedly asked the Jamtara district election officer for a report on the alleged impersonations, and the poll panel has already ordered police to file cases against anyone found posing as fraudulent BLOs.
