Srinagar, Nov 28 – The ruling National Conference (NC) is wrapping up its second‑day meeting of the working committee in Srinagar, after passing a few resolutions and making key announcements, according to insiders.
The gathering, chaired by president Dr Farooq Abdullah, was held at the Nawa‑e‑Subha headquarters. Vice‑president and Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, every member of the committee and a handful of special guests were in attendance.
Reports say the NC had addressed ways to strengthen the party earlier on Thursday, focusing on internal organization and development issues for the Union Territory. The group is also re‑examining its losses in two recent by‑elections, where the party lost Nagrota to the BJP and Budgam to the PDP.
In addition, the committee discussed criticisms from senior leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who has publicly claimed that the party failed to deliver on promises made during the 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections. As a result, the party chose not to invite him to the meeting; he noted that this was the first time since 2002 he had been excluded from a session.
The NC currently holds 41 seats in the 90‑member Legislative Assembly, with the BJP on 29, Congress on 6, PDP 4, CPI‑M 1, Peoples Conference 1, Aam Aadmi Party 1, Awami Ittehad Party 1 and six independents—five of whom have later joined the NC. The Assembly is split almost evenly, with 47 seats in the Valley and 43 in the Jammu division.
