In Kozhikode, Kerala, a protest turned violent last week, leaving Congress MP Shafi Parambil with serious injuries. The incident has sparked calls for a full investigation into police misconduct and alleged conspirators.
Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan, who visited Parambil after the attack, condemned the police’s actions as a deliberate assault on the MP. “A thousand UDF supporters were present, yet the police blocked them. When those with the police were summoned, only about fifty CPI‑M supporters were allowed to attend,” Satheesan said. He added that officers used batons and struck citizens’ heads and faces without orders.
Satheesan also accused a senior police officer of throwing a grenade directly at an activist’s face. “A grenade should never be aimed at a crowd. Proper procedure requires it to be deployed in an empty area so the smoke disperses the crowd. This is the first time I have seen a senior officer act this way,” he said. “The police are showing more loyalty to a ruler than to the law.”
The opposition leader has demanded a thorough inquiry into who planned the attack and who ordered the officers to act. “Which meeting did the SP attend yesterday? Who organized the event? Who was the speaker? Who authorised the deployment of police officers? Police officials are acting as if they are above the law. This cannot happen again,” he urged.
The Kerala Congress leadership has echoed those demands. The party has asked state authorities to take steps so that such incidents are never repeated and that citizens can protest peacefully. In addition, Congress officials have approached the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, filing a complaint about a breach of privilege by police officers involved with MP Parambil.
The investigation into the Kozhikode protest is under way. Local and national media continue to follow the case, which has already drawn attention to police conduct and accountability in Kerala.
