Varanasi – Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will launch a two‑year Master’s program in Yoga (M.A. Yoga) through its Department of Vedic Philosophy, part of the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan. The course will run for four semesters and will blend deep study of classical yoga texts with hands‑on training in asanas, pranayama, mudras, bandhas and satkarmas.

Students will read key scriptures such as the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and other ancient yoga treatises. “We want every student to master both theory and practice,” said Professor Rajaram Shukla, head of the faculty. He added that the program’s fees will stay lower than those of most other universities, keeping the spirit of Mahatma Malaviya’s vision—high‑quality education that stays affordable.

BHU’s Academic Council approved the new program unanimously on September 27 after students and faculty pushed for it. Shukla noted that no other university in the Purvanchal region currently offers a comparable course.

The entrance rules will follow government and university guidelines. The course will also dovetail with the University Grants Commission’s National Eligibility Test (NET) in Yoga, giving graduates a clear path into teaching or research roles.

Professor Shashikant Dwivedi of the Vedic Department helped design the curriculum. Both faculty members emphasise that the M.A. Yoga blends theory with practice, enabling students to use yoga principles in everyday life and in wider society.

Alumni Shivam Tiwari and research scholar Sunakshu Tiwari say the new program could turn BHU into a national hub for yoga scholarship. The course, set to start next academic year, promises to bring ancient Indian wisdom into the modern classroom for students around the world.
