In Tripura, authorities have pulled a man over a week ago for running a fake Facebook account that spread hate and distorted information. Sudip Debbarma, age 41 and a resident of Kalyanpur in Khowai district, was arrested by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Tripura Police Crime Branch. The police traced a profile called “Rinki Debbarma” and discovered that it was actually managed by Debbarma, who pretended to be a woman. In court, he was remanded for five days of police custody.

The case was filed on October 22 under sections of the 2023 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Indian Penal Code for posting “communal and provocative content” that could disturb public peace. The arrest shows the state government’s tightening grip on social media narratives.

Just days earlier, another Agartala‑based online personality, Madhabi Biswas, was taken into custody for allegedly spreading obscenity through her posts. Biswas, a regular content creator on Facebook, had taken on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, and local BJP leaders. Multiple corporators and BJP members filed complaints against her, and police charged her under the IT Act and the new 2023 law. She was remanded to three days of custody, and is now in judicial custody.

Opposition parties, including the CPI‑M and Congress, and the Tripura Human Rights Organisation condemned Biswas’s arrest. Senior advocate Purushottam Ray Barman said the police had pressured her to stop criticizing the state, and called for her unconditional release.

Both cases highlight Tripura’s crackdown on online dissent. If you want to stay informed about how social media is being monitored in Northeast India, keep an eye on developments from the Tripura Police Crime Branch and the courts in Agartala.
