A 71‑year‑old lawyer tried to throw a shoe at India’s Chief Justice Bhushan Ranganath Gavai inside the Supreme Court on Monday. The attack happened while the court was in session, but courts’ security staff stopped the man, Rakesh Kishore, and escorted him out of the building. The Delhi Police released him after the Supreme Court said it would not press charges.
The incident has sparked a sharp reaction from Congress leaders, most notably Manickam Tagore. On the social‑media platform X, Tagore condemned the shoe assault as a “security lapse” that shows how hate and fanaticism have become normal in society. He compared the attack to the 1948 killing of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse, warning that glorifying violence can drive people to act like “Godse 2.0.”
Tagore praised Chief Justice Gavai for staying calm and dignified during the event. He slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for staying silent, saying the PM’s lack of response weakens the judiciary. “If even the CJI can be attacked and the PM looks away, what protection will judges in lower courts have?” he wrote. “Silence from the top breeds fear at the bottom,” he added.
The All India Judges Association (AIJA) also expressed concern. In a resolution, the AIJA called the attacker’s acts unbecoming of the profession and said it violated the constitutional ethos of decorum, discipline and institutional integrity. The Bar Council of India has since debarred Kishore from appearing, acting, pleading or practising in any court, tribunal or authority in India. The order also revokes any identity card, proximity pass or access permission issued by courts or Bar Associations.
Tagore’s comments underline a larger debate over judicial independence and the role of the government in protecting judges. He urged the government to take concrete steps to secure the safety of all judges, warning that a culture of silence could erode judicial independence gradually “judgment by judgment.”
The shoe assault at the Supreme Court is not just a moment of security failure; for many, it reflects a wider environment poisoned by hate and enabled by silence. Whether India chooses the path of peace, as Gandhi advocated, or the path of violence, such incidents show that choice is urgent.
