A mob in Manipur’s Chandel district stopped a police convoy and damaged several vehicles, but luckily no one got hurt. Officials shared the details on Thursday after the clash happened late Wednesday in Longja village.
The attack came as Manipur Police carried out an operation in the hilly areas near the Myanmar border. A police source in Imphal explained that a crowd, mostly Kuki tribal women, blocked the convoy and smashed windshields on three vehicles—including one from the Additional Superintendent of Police for Chandel. Kuki groups claim the police show favoritism to the Meitei community, fueling ongoing ethnic tensions in the state.
In other news from Imphal East district, police nabbed two key suspects behind Tuesday’s arson and mob assault on security forces. The men are Konjengbam Nanao, also known as Arunjit, 21, and Heikrujam Khamba Meitei, 43, both from Yumnam Patlou Awang Leikai.
Security teams also caught a self-proclaimed corporal from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) militant group. He’s Khundongbam Nandabir Meitei, alias Chinglen, 55, from Heirok Salam Leirak in Thoubal district.
Meanwhile, joint operations in Imphal West, Imphal East, and Churachandpur districts turned up a big haul of weapons and ammo. Forces seized a 9mm SMG carbine with magazine, five single-barrel rifles, a double-barrel gun, five pistols, five pompi guns, two 12-bore shotguns, a modified .303 sniper rifle with lens, and an M-16 automatic rifle with magazine. They also grabbed lots of ammunition, explosives, and even Chinese grenades.
Manipur Police say they’re ramping up search operations and patrols in fringe areas, mixed communities, and high-risk spots across districts. Teams set up 114 checkpoints in hills and valleys to stop suspicious movements and vehicles. Along the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37), they’ve escorted convoys carrying essential goods to keep things moving safely. Extra security covers vulnerable spots and sensitive routes.
Police are warning everyone to ignore rumors and fake videos spreading online. “Check any suspicious clips or audio with our Central Control Room,” a statement urged. They added that sharing fake social media posts could lead to legal trouble. Plus, they’re calling on people to hand over any looted arms, ammo, or explosives to the nearest police or security post right away.
