New Delhi, Nov. 23 – The Indian Navy plans to officially hand over the Mahe, the lead vessel of its new Mahe‑class shallow‑water anti‑submarine warfare craft, at Mumbai’s naval dockyard this coming Monday, the navy said.
The launch will be hosted by Vice‑Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, head of Western Naval Command, and will be attended by Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, according to the press release.
Bringing a fresh wave of indigenous, sleek and high‑speed warships to service, the Mahe will highlight India’s growing capabilities in naval design, build and systems integration – with over 80 % of its components sourced locally.
Dubbed a “Silent Hunter” for the western coast, it embodies the spirit of self‑reliance and is geared to protect Indian maritime borders.
Produced by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, the vessel showcases the cutting‑edge of India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” naval design programme.
It is compact, yet highly capable, offering speed, stealth, and endurance – vital attributes for littoral dominance.
Equipped with a mix of firepower, quiet movement and agility, the ship will pursue submarines, patrol coastlines and defend key sea lanes.
The craft is named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar shore, and its crest features an “Urumi,” the flexible sword of Kalaripayattu, symbolising agility, precision and lethal elegance.
In a prior release, the navy explained that the crest drew from the region’s cultural and martial heritage, with the “Urumi” rising from the sea.
Looking forward, the navy has already begun preparations for Navy Day 2025 on December 3.
The day will host a spectacular operational display at Shangumugham beach in Thiruvananthapuram, showcasing precision, professionalism and the growing maritime strength of the force.
Earlier scheduled for December 4, the event was moved back a day as part of the navy’s plan to hold Navy Day celebrations away from major bases – a tradition that has seen displays in Puri (Odisha) and Sindhudurg (Maharashtra) in previous years.
