New Delhi, Oct 6 – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is demanding answers after a construction worker died at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The commission has called on the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, IGI Airport Unit, Delhi, to deliver a full report within two weeks.
The NHRC launched its inquiry on its own initiative after a news story surfaced that police supposedly cleaned up blood stains from the site, raising questions of a cover‑up. “If these allegations are true, it could amount to a serious human‑rights violation,” the commission said in a statement.
Phone calls, a hospital admission and a police file back up the tragedy. The worker, hired by a contractor, fell about 10 feet while working on the runway. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Police have filed a case for death due to negligence. No details yet exist on whether compensation reached the worker’s family.
The NHRC’s request includes specifics about any payment already made to the next of kin and a clear timeline for full disclosure. The commission’s powers come from the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, which allows it to act on media reports and other public information – even without a formal complaint.
“We are committed to safeguarding life, liberty, equality, and dignity,” the commission’s spokesperson added. “This incident underscores the need for strict safety standards in airport construction projects.”
Businesses and workers at India’s busiest airports are watching closely. The NHRC’s action highlights growing scrutiny over safety protocols and accountability at major travel hubs. As Delhi’s IGI Airport prepares for a busy travel season, stakeholders must ensure that accidents no longer end in loss of life.
