The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in after shocking details surfaced about a 5‑year‑old boy who died at a residential school in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. According to a local media report, the child was severely beaten by a teacher after refusing school food. The boy collapsed and stopped breathing, leaving the family devastated.

The NHRC, which monitors human‑rights violations across India, acted on its own motion when it saw the story. It has now sent urgent notices to the Jharkhand Chief Secretary and the Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police. The commission demands a comprehensive report within two weeks, urging swift investigation and accountability.

The case also reveals deeper concerns. The boy’s brother, who attends the same school, said the child often felt anxious, missed his parents, and showed signs of fear around teachers. When the school teacher reprimanded him and struck him with a stick, the boy’s breathing stopped suddenly. The brother describes the boy’s eyes remaining open while he remained unresponsive, a chilling image that has fueled public outrage.

Police reports suggest that the accused teacher and the school’s manager are currently missing, unable to be located or questioned. This development raises serious questions about safeguarding measures in residential schools and the enforcement of child‑protection laws.

The NHRC, established under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, actively protects life, liberty, equality, and dignity as enshrined in India’s Constitution and international covenants. Its mandate allows it to act on media reports, public knowledge or other sources, without a formal complaint.

As the investigation unfolds, the community and human‑rights advocates are demanding transparent answers, stronger safety protocols in schools, and justice for the child who lost his life because of alleged abuse. The outcome could shape how educational institutions in India safeguard vulnerable students from violence and abuse.
