In Bengaluru, a lawyer smashed a shoe at the Chief Justice of India during a Supreme Court session, sparking national outrage. Congress leaders immediately condemned the act and called for strict action.
Congress reaction
At his home in Sadashivanagar, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the incident was “highly condemnable” and that no judge should be attacked under the shield of religion. He echoed statements from senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kharge warned that the incident shows how “religious sentiment” can still drive disrespect toward the judiciary in our 78‑year‑old democracy. He urged the government to prosecute the aggressor and to send a clear message to the public that it is illegal to insult judges.
Letter from Karnataka Congress
KPCC president Ramesh Babu, who heads the party’s media wing, wrote to PM Modi demanding a judicial inquiry into the attack. He described the lawyer’s “Sanatani” remark as a direct assault on the independence of the courts and said that mere statements were not enough. Babu asked that the Home Ministry and Delhi Police arrest and prosecute the lawyer under the Indian Penal Code and the Contempt of Courts Act.
Legal community protests
Lawyers staged a silent protest outside the State High Court demanding the immediate arrest of the lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, who threw the shoe. They warned that the attack threatens the constitutional balance and called for a full investigation.
The incident has put the Supreme Court’s composure in spotlight. Congress and Karnataka’s legal fraternity insist that swift, decisive action is needed to protect judicial dignity and maintain public trust in India’s legal system.
