Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned a cultural highlight into a political moment at a Silver Jubilee ceremony in Chhattisgarh on Saturday. He accepted a colorful “Mor Mukut” – a peacock‑feather crown – from the local Ramnami Samaj, a community that marks devotion to Lord Ram with the tattooed mantra “Ram Ram.” The gesture, which drew visible cheers and some tears from on‑lookers, was deliberately staged onstage despite initial security cues that suggested pulling it back.
The event coincided with a rollout of Rs 14,260 crore (about $1.8 billion) in new infrastructure projects across the state, including roads, power grids and hospitals. Modi’s focus was both on the cultural ceremony and on the government’s broader development agenda. Local elder Pala Ram, who draped the prime minister in a shawl, praised Modi’s leadership in the recent construction of the Ayodhya Ram Temple and added that the crown symbolised the community’s gratitude.
Ramnami Samaj members spoke about protecting their heritage, raising concerns over dwindling worshippers and calling for stronger cow‑conservation policies, a sattvic diet, and expanded village welfare programs. A similar request had been voiced earlier in the Sakti district, where locals had also predicted the PM’s wearing of the crown as a seal of a “returning monarch.”
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared a heart‑warming video on the social‑media platform X, calling the moment “unforgettable” and praising Modi for easing security concerns and allowing the ceremony to proceed. The PM’s visit also lined up with the opening of the state’s new assembly building and the launch of the Brahma Kumaris’ Shanti Shikhar initiative.
In a time of growing political division, the Crowning episode helped boost a sense of unity and cultural pride in Chhattisgarh, while the new infrastructure spending and welfare pledges tied the state’s future development to a broader national narrative.
