Kolkata, Oct 13 – Police in Durgapur, West Bengal, have taken a fourth suspect into custody in the brutal gang‑rape of a second‑year medical student from Odisha. The latest arrest, made on Monday night, brings the total number of people held to four, as authorities continue a search for the fifth accused.
The latest suspect, a temporary worker with the Durgapur Municipal Corporation, will appear before the Sub‑Divisional Court later today. Police will ask the court to keep him in custody while the investigation proceeds.
Earlier this week, five people were named in an FIR. Three of them had already been booked in police custody for 10 days on Sunday, while the other two are being pursued. A male friend of the student, who left with her for dinner that night, remains in police detention and is being questioned.
All suspects will undergo DNA testing, according to the police, to confirm their involvement. The authorities are coordinating the testing logistics.
Thousands of students and families have swarmed Durgapur in a protest, demanding justice. A delegation from Odisha arrived on Sunday but was denied access to the hospital. Women’s Commission officials from Odisha are expected to visit the city on Monday to meet the student, after which they will submit a full report to the state government.
The attempted attack began when the student, who stepped out of campus with her friend for dinner, was confronted by a group of men on motorcycles. They spied her, made lewd comments, chased her friend away and then led her into a forested area behind the campus. There the men gang‑raped her and stole her mobile phone, which they later threw away.
The student was found lying injured by other college students, taken to a local hospital, and remains under treatment. The incident has shocked the student community and reignited calls for stronger campus security and stricter enforcement of sexual violence laws.
